Online coupons woes

When you buy an online coupon, how do you know a store will honor it?

Edgar Dworsky walked into Rose’s Chinese Restaurant in Waltham, Mass., last week with a $6 coupon he’d purchased for $3 and found out the hard way that not everything is what it seems online.

The online coupon category is getting more crowded daily. Led by giants Groupon and Living Social, there are now hundreds of smaller competitors. But not every email offering a discount is a good deal.

Dworsky purchased his coupon from MobileSpinach.com in early February. But when he went into Rose’s, the owner said he’d never heard of MobileSpinach and didn’t plan to honor it. Instead of enjoying a cheap meal, Dworsky found himself in the middle of the messy world of online merchant discounts.

Dworsky’s tale isn’t unique. Many store owners around the country say they’ve never agreed to accept coupons being offered for sale on MobileSpinach, and the firm has been dogged by nationwide complaints that it is selling allegedly “fake” coupons.

The firm’s co-owner, John Vitti, blames the complaints on misunderstandings, poor memories of merchants and over-eager affiliate salespeople, and says he’s happy to issue refunds.  But merchants getting pitched daily by ever-increasing number of Groupon-like sites are often caught in the middle, completely confused by the complicated world of e-coupons.

Dworsky was equally frustrated when he tried to use his coupon on Feb. 11.

“The man at the counter, the owner, said he didn’t know what this certificate was, that he never agreed to offer these certificates, and that he had not been paid for them. He indicated that someone had come in the day before with one like it also,” Dworsky said.

And while MobileSpinach later agreed to refund the $3 he’d spent on the coupon, he wasn’t really satisfied. Calls placed to other nearby restaurants unearthed a similar pattern.

“This is a scam of sorts … or a naive company that thinks they can advertise deals that they have not yet formally acquired,” said Dworsky, a former assistant attorney general in Massachusetts who now runs the consumer advocate website MousePrint.org.

Indeed, MobileSpinach has previously been accused of selling deals it didn’t really have the right to sell. Last August, San Francisco-area foodie magazine Grubstreet wrote two stories about restaurants and consumers getting tripped up by Mobile Spinach group coupons that weren’t authorized. In November, a student newspaper at George Washington University reported the same problemin the Washington, D.C., area. The paper said 50 disappointed consumers were turned away from a small restaurant called Crepaway with invalid $10 vouchers they’d purchased from Mobile Spinach for $5.

Other unusual stories dog Mobile Spinach. Jim Gilbride, who owns Old Country Deli in Hicksville, N.Y., told msnbc.com that a caller recently offered him an opportunity to buy a Mobile Spinach ad. He declined, and was surprised when the ad showed up on MobileSpinach.com anyway.

“I never heard him say (the ad would go up anyway),” Gilbride said. “I dismissed him when he called.”

A man who answered the phone at Kabob Corner in Medford, Mass., said the same thing about a $3 for $6 coupon offered for that store.

“It is a fake coupon,” he told msnbc.com before hanging up.

Even merchants who have dealt with Mobile Spinach seem to face some confusion.

At Creative Cakes in Silver Spring, Md., owner Randi Goldman said she agreed to a $5 for $10 in merchandise deal with Mobile Spinach about six months ago.  She generally feels pestered by sites like Groupon and Living Social, and doesn’t like the revenue split they offer — merchants only pocket 25 cents for every dollar in value that is sold. But her Mobile Spinach salesman said she’d earn 100 cents on the dollar for every coupon sold.

“They said they’d pay me $5 for every coupon, and there was a special deal with the credit card companies who would pay the other $5,” Goldman said.  So far, only a few coupons have been redeemed and her PayPal account has been credited the funds, she said.

Vitti, the co-founder of Mobile Spinach, admits that there have been some customer service issues, but blames them on confusion in the coupon marketplace.

“This space is getting crowded,” he said. “There’s just so much confusion. Sometimes merchants don’t remember what they’ve agreed to.”

That’s his explanation for Dworsky’s issue at the Chinese restaurant.

“I personally had a conversation with the owner of Rose’s Chinese Restaurant and he apologizes for this confusion and so do we,” he said.

A worker who answered the phone at Rose’s said the owner wasn’t present and declined to comment.

Vitti said the rash of San Francisco complaints was the result of a short-term experiment that involved offering deals for sale before they’d been arranged with a merchant. The company later ditched the idea, he said.

He attributed the Washington, D.C.,-area complaints to rogue affiliates. Some deals on MobileSpinach.com weren’t arranged directly by the Mobile Spinach sales team, but rather by affiliates in a revenue-sharing arrangement.

“There was confusion because the only way to redeem those was for people to make purchases online, and they were walking into the store with those,” he said. ”Over time we were getting more and more customer support issues, to a point where we are uncomfortable with them. Sometimes these aggregators and deal providers don’t have best relationships (with merchants). … Sometimes you wondered, ‘Who’s got the relationship here?’ “

So as of Feb. 4, he said, Mobile Spinach has stopped dealing with affiliates and will only promote deals sold directly by its sales force. The number of deals being offered dropped from “thousands to about 400″ as a result, he said.

“We are trying to clean up this industry,” he said. “There has been many well documented problems in the coupon, gift card and now the deal space with redemption at any size merchant … even large national retailers.”

He said the full value offer to Creative Cakes was real – “customer acquisition costs,” he said – but added that it is only temporary.

Consumers who feel they’ve purchased a bad deal from Mobile Spinach should contact the firm for a refund, he said. “We have a refund-anytime, no-questions-asked policy,” he said.

Merchants, however, face a slightly trickier proposition. They can refuse to honor any coupon, but that risks irritating a potential customer. Gilbride, the deli owner, said he’d probably honor a coupon brought in by a frequent customer just to avoid a negative interaction.

”I’ve been in this business 26 years now,” he said. “I try not to get frustrated anymore by any of this.”

Target, Best Buy face tough online retail competition

RICHFIELD — Faced with tough competition from online retailers, Target and Best Buy are under ever-growing pressure to keep prices as low as possible.

Analysts say most retailers must compete aggressively or risk losing customers and sales. Consumer expectations and unrelenting competition give retailers no choice.

There’s no clear winner in the ongoing price wars — except the consumer.

Among them is Justin Nordhausen of Minneapolis, who recently visited the Best Buy store in Richfield, Minn., to look for a stereo receiver. When Nordhausen found one that interested him, but wasn’t ready to buy it, he took out his smart phone to see if he could buy the receiver for less elsewhere.

“I’m looking things up on Amazon, getting their price,” Nordhausen said. “Usually I just go with Amazon. They seem to have the best price.”

Best Buy wanted $249.99 for the receiver. But Nordhausen found one on Amazon for $198.99.

That’s $50 less, give or take, depending on Amazon’s shipping fee, if any, and the sales tax that Amazon won’t collect but Best Buy must.

Comment on Court blocks Colorado AG from investigating tribes' online payday loans

ConservativeProf wrote:Wow. I am impressed. Perhaps there is a way around the onerous nanny state.

I think that the tribes may be a reasonable escape from Obamacare. When the impact of price controls and rationing reduces the ability to obtain health care, health care services on the reservations may be a reasonable option. It beats traveling to a foreign country.

Yea, we’ll all have to drive to “four corners” to get an MRI.

Makes no difference if people think this guy is using the tribes to get around whatever law. They’re adults and free to sign any contract they want. The AG is complaining that it’s some sort of loophole? He’s a lawyer for pete’s sake, they live for loopholes.

Nordstrom Rings the Register: Is Now the Time to Buy?

The resiliency of the affluent consumer is unparalleled as of late. Shoppers were once again out in force during the holiday season for upscale department store Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) , which last night reported very solid fourth-quarter results and issued guidance for fiscal 2012.

For the quarter, same-store sales rose an impressive 7.1% while overall earnings jumped a more modest 1.7% to $1.11. One of the reasons Nordstrom is able to continuously surpass analysts’ estimates is its ability to sell merchandise at full price. According to statements released from the company last night, the amount of merchandise being sold at full price is back to pre-recession levels.

The same can’t be said for some of Nordstrom’s mall-based rivals. J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) only recently revised the way it approached consumers regarding discounts, abandoning its “discount first, ask questions later” policy. In fact, last year 72% of total sales for J.C. Penney came from merchandise marked down by at least 50%.

Higher-end teen retailer Abercrombie Fitch (NYSE: ANF  ) has also had problems with discounting. In its recently reported fourth-quarter results, profits tumbled 79% over the year-ago period.

The thing to keep in mind is that Nordstrom’s success isn’t hinged only on its ability to sell at full price. The company is innovating as well and making it easier for its customers to stay on top of the latest fashion trends. Nordstrom is in the process of increasing the selection of its online inventory. More importantly, the company has linked its in-store inventory for its online customers so they can see where particular merchandise is located.

This hits a very key point of today’s consumers: It’s not just the right price, but the right time that can sometimes be the most important factor to creating a sale. Consumer Reports recently surveyed 55,000 customers’ shopping experiences both in store and online, and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) and Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD  ) were given the lowest scores of the retailing group for overall online satisfaction. Wal-Mart may be the king of retail, but it has a lot to learn about guiding its customers through their online shopping experience.

Although Nordstrom wasn’t included in this Consumer Reports survey, it’s clear it’s doing something right. Online sales for the quarter jumped 35% and the company expanded its free shipping to all price-points (the previous threshold was spending $200 or more).

For fiscal 2012 Nordstrom forecast same-store sales growth of 4% to 6% with EPS in the range of $3.30 to $3.45. Wall Street didn’t take kindly to the EPS guidance, which is slightly below the consensus estimate for $3.59.

Despite this “miss,” I feel Nordstrom has taken the necessary steps to keep both its in-store and online customers shopping, and its guidance is nothing short of solid in my book. Even though I am currently down by 4% on my CAPScall of outperform on Nordstrom, I see no reason not to continue being optimistic on its long-term outlook.

RICHFIELD, Minn. —
Analysts say most retailers these days must compete aggressively on prices or risk losing customers and sales. Consumer expectations and unrelenting competition give retailers no choice.

Retailers such as Target and Best Buy are under ever-growing pressure to compete on price, keeping them as low as possible.

There’s no clear winner in the ongoing price wars — except the consumer.

Justin Nordhausen of Minneapolis visited the Richfield Best Buy to look for a stereo receiver. He found one that interested him, but he wasn’t ready to buy it. He took out his smartphone to find if he could purchase the receiver for less elsewhere.

“I’m looking things up on Amazon, getting their price,” Nordhausen said. “Usually I just go with Amazon. They seem to have the best price.”

Best Buy wants $249.99 for the receiver that has caught Nordhausen’s eye. And Amazon wants…

“$198.99.”

Fifty dollars less, give or take, depending on Amazon’s shipping fee, if any, and the sales tax that Amazon won’t collect but Best Buy must.

But sometimes, Nordhausen finds the best deal for what he wants is at Best Buy. He recently purchased speakers and a car stereo system from Best Buy.

BRICK AND MORTAR HOLDS ITS OWN

Best Buy is consistently beaten on price by Walmart , Amazon.com and other tough competitors, say Wall Street analysts. But Best Buy contends it can hold its own on price. Enough, at least, to rack up near $50 billion in annual sales.

Larger view

Sam Faradjnya, a salesman at the Richfield Best Buy, knows that many people use the Internet at home to compare retailers’ prices. He estimates 40 percent of shoppers use smartphones to check prices while they’re actually visiting the store.

“The first thing we get all the time these days is, ‘Hey Amazon has it for this price,’” Faradjnya said.

Best Buy will match a lower price on an identical product found in a competitor’s store. And matching an online competitor’s price isn’t out the question, Faradjnya said.

“I would have a discussion with my managers.” he said. “If it totally makes sense, why not?

“Price matching has been more common than it was before. I can tell you that.”

‘BRICKS AND CLICKS’

Competing with online retailers is especially challenging for Best Buy. Those rivals don’t have the real estate and labor costs Best Buy does.

And Internet-only retailers typically don’t collect sales taxes. Some analysts say Best Buy must scale back, close stores and cut staff if it is to compete long-term on prices.

Larger view

But Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn recently told CNBC that when a customer walks into one of his stores looking to make a purchase “we love our odds every time.”

At the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas this year, Dunn said his some 1,100 big-box stores and 180,000 employees are assets that drive sales as the company pursues a “bricks and clicks” strategy.

“Online is really important,” he said. “But by itself, it’s not going to be sufficient. Just as bricks by itself is not going to be sufficient. Where those things come together is really going to matter for this industry.”

Target is giving no ground on price, even as arch-rival WalMart is poised to cut prices by a combined $2 billion this year and next.

In a conference call with analysts last November, Target Executive Vice President Kathee Tesija said Target’s prices have been “spot on.”

“We’ve been really pleased with how competitive our prices have been and we believe our pricing will measure up,” Tesija said.

Especially with the help of suppliers. The Wall Street Journal reported in January that Target is asking suppliers to help it match rivals’ prices.

Compare prices online on a range of products and it becomes obvious that no big retailer always has the lowest price.

“No one is winning all the time,” said Alexander Muse, CEO of ShopSavvy, which provides a leading price comparison app for mobile phones. “It’s such a competitive space.”

Some folks swear Amazon.com is rarely beat on price, but Muse said that is not backed up by data provided by more than 40,000 retailers.

“Amazon has the best price on average about six percent of the time. That means 94 percent of the time, another retailer has a better deal,” Muse said.

Where to Buy Skate Gear in Maine

Finding a skate shop in Maine can be a bit of a challenge, especially since Capital City Skate in Augusta closed its brick and mortar shop. Thankfully, you can still buy from them online. Here’s a quick rundown of a few of the skate shops that are still up and running:

Backwoods Snowboards and Skateboards

Backwoods Snowboards and Skateboards is located on Garfield Road in Auburn. Just as the name suggests, it sells both skateboards and snowboards. You’ll find a decent selection of skate decks by Darkstar, Alien Workshop, Baker, Plan B and more. The shop also carries Sector 9 longboards, hardware and skate accessories. Skate shoes are also readily available. Some of the brands you’ll find include VOX, IPath and Supra. A pair of skate shoes will tend to cost you in the neighborhood of $80 and longboard completes average $165. Contact the store direct to confirm that someone will be there as hours of operation vary.

Wheels and Waves

Wheels and Waves is located on Post Road in Wells and offers a solid selection of skate gear. You’ll find such major skate brands as Flip, Toy Machine, Gravity, Habitat and Venture Trucks. The store also carries bicycles, surfboards and lifestyle related apparel at reasonable prices. Hours of operation vary so call before you head on over.

Cadillac Mountain Sports

Cadillac Mountain Sports has two locations in Maine. One is on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor and the other is on High Street in Ellsworth. Both carry a wide selection of skateboards including Almost, Zoo York, and Enjoi. Both stores open daily, year round.

Resession Skate Shop

The Resession Skate Shop is located on Market Street in Portland. The shop is fairly new and is known to have some great sales and special events. Sometimes you can snag a shop deck for as low as $10. In addition to skate decks the store also stocks skate shoes, hardware and skate apparel at reasonable prices. Hours of operation vary.

Zumiez

There are two Zumiez locations in Maine as well. One is located on Maine Mall Road in South Portland and the other is situated in the Kittery Premium Outlets Mall off Route 1 in Kittery. Both are open daily, year round.

My children are skaters and I have a history of following the sport.
